Atacama Tours or a Rental Car

Verdict

For two people on three days, take the tours — the arithmetic rarely favours driving and the El Tatio road in the dark is not a beginner's drive. For four people over a week, rent the car for the accessible days and still take a tour to El Tatio.

This is the decision that either creates or destroys your booking, so it is worth being straight about. Renting a 4x4 in Calama and driving yourself around the Atacama is entirely possible and for some trips it is the better answer. For most three-day visits it is not, and the reasons are specific rather than general.

What you can genuinely drive to

The Salar de Atacama and Laguna Chaxa, Toconao, the Puritama hot springs, Pukará de Quitor, and Valle de la Luna if you have bought the ticket in advance. These are paved or good gravel roads and there is no reason to be driven along them.

The El Tatio problem

Ninety kilometres of mountain road, climbing to 4,320 m, driven in the dark before 5 a.m., on your first or second day at altitude. People do it. It is also where the accidents happen, and hire companies are explicit about the road conditions. This is the single strongest argument for a tour.

What needs a 4x4 or a permit

The altiplanic lagoons and Piedras Rojas are long gravel runs at 4,000 m. Some community-administered areas restrict private access. A standard hire car is not the right vehicle and in places not a permitted one.

The arithmetic

A 4x4 out of Calama, fuel for several hundred kilometres of gravel, the same entrance fees you would pay anyway, and the transfer you no longer need. For two people that total generally exceeds three days of shared excursions at $32 to $89 each. For four, it flips, because the car costs the same and the tours multiply.

The thing that is not on the spreadsheet

A guide who can explain why the rocks are that colour, what the community charging the fee is, and which lagoon you are actually allowed to swim in. On a landscape this unfamiliar that is worth more than it would be somewhere you already understand.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 4x4 in the Atacama?

For the altiplanic lagoons and Piedras Rojas, yes. For the salar, Toconao and Valle de la Luna, a normal car is adequate.

Can I drive to El Tatio myself?

You can, and some people do. It is ninety kilometres of mountain road in the dark, climbing to 4,320 m, and it is the trip we would most strongly suggest handing to a driver.

When does renting make sense?

Four people, a week or more, and a plan that skips or outsources the pre-dawn high-altitude days.
